Design through making

 

Some projects are developed directly on the object or form they are intended for.

 

Pieces of woven fabric can be placed, moved and tested on a mannequin, a form or an object, gradually building the shape and proportions of the final piece.

 

You can experiment as you go, rather than knowing every detail before you begin.

 

This way of working allows the project to evolve through making, with the loom, the yarn and your own decisions all becoming part of the design process.

Experiment with yarn

The more you explore, the more interesting your yarn choices can become. Different thicknesses, weights, textures and elasticities can all change how a piece behaves.

​

You might combine fine and bulky yarns, work with yarns that stretch differently, or experiment with fibers whose texture changes along their length. Bouclé and other textured yarns can be especially challenging because they don’t behave uniformly, and that unpredictability becomes part of the design.

​

Learning how to work with these differences takes practice. Over time, you begin to understand not only how a yarn looks, but how it will behave when woven, knitted, crocheted, stretched, joined or shaped.

Combine techniques
